To become the kind of person whom others will think, "We can rest assured if he’s going to make it for us."

Mobile Payment Business Division

Pament Infrastructure Development Department.

About the Job

In developing the multi-QR payment system, I am mainly in charge of the backend development of the in-house system. I am currently focused on dealing with accounting-related specification changes for cross-border e-commerce and electronic payment systems.

Until now, we were divided into two teams for “mini-program development” and “miscellaneous development,” but there has been a move to standardize the specifications to some extent, and I now engage mainly in specification changes and consolidating designs, rather than large-scale development.

Systems are constantly required to improve their performance and update their operations according to business needs, so I feel a sense of accomplishment when I make modifications that result in improvements. I particularly feel that the accounting-related parts of the system are improving because I use them myself for testing.

How do you communicate in a multilingual environment?

Chinese is used relatively often in my department, but people have adequate understanding of Japanese too.

A Japanese-speaking member will generally mediate any communication with Chinese members who are not fluent in Japanese, so I often have to check many times with that person. But I think that’s the same when dealing with Japanese people. We talk about the system with other people engaged in the same work, so we don’t have trouble with miscommunication. When we come across difficult explanations in documents, I try to paraphrase them or draw diagrams to make sure we are on the same page. We are a department that requires accuracy, so we are very thorough in our efforts.
Although we work in a multilingual environment, we have never had any miscommunication issues in development.

During lunch breaks, I usually go out with my colleagues in my department to eat. We speak a mixture of Chinese and Japanese, but we have normal chats about where we went on our days off and so on. I sometimes eat out alone.
But only if I really want to eat something specific.

Do you have any goals for the future?

I hope to be the kind of person whom others will rely on as a developer, not just internally, but also externally, and will think, “We can rest assured if he’s going to make it for us.”

Technically speaking, I want to be able to do everything quickly in the future,

rather than one specific thing. I don’t know what kind of development I will engage in, so rather than specializing in one thing, I want to be a so-called “full-stack engineer” who can handle any field as a system specialist.
